"A hat can not only change your day, it can also change your life!" - Jenny Pfanenstiel

The Art of Couture Millinery - Some traditions deserve to be preserved.

In a world increasingly defined by speed and mass production, Formé Millinery exists to preserve one of fashion's oldest and most celebrated art forms.

Every hat begins much as it has for centuries with steam, antique wooden hat blocks, hand stitching, and patience. Each piece is shaped by hand using traditional couture millinery techniques that have been passed from artisan to artisan for generations. These methods cannot be rushed, automated, or replicated by modern manufacturing. They require time, precision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

This is slow luxury. This is couture millinery.

At the heart of Formé Millinery is Master Milliner Jenny Pfanenstiel, whose life's work has been dedicated to preserving these disappearing traditions while redefining what modern luxury can be. Rather than following fleeting fashion trends, Jenny creates timeless works of wearable art, pieces designed to be treasured, restored, and ultimately passed from one generation to the next.

Among the studio's most treasured tools is a rare 1800s braid machine, a remarkable piece of millinery history that few artisans in the world still know how to operate. Combined with antique wooden hat blocks and couture hand-finishing techniques, it allows Jenny to create sculptural forms and intricate textures that simply cannot be achieved through contemporary production methods. Every turn of the wheel is a continuation of a craft that has shaped fashion for centuries.

For more than two decades, Jenny has become one of America's leading voices in luxury millinery. As the founder of Formé Millinery, Judith M Millinery Supply House, and The Hat Shoppe, she has dedicated her career not only to creating exceptional couture headwear but also to ensuring the future of the craft itself. Her work has earned her the distinction of Official Milliner of the Kentucky Derby Museum and 7-Time Featured Milliner of the Kentucky Derby, honors that recognize both artistic excellence and her lasting contribution to one of America's most celebrated fashion traditions.

Jenny's creations have been worn by First Ladies, international royalty, and distinguished collectors around the world, including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, and Barbara Corcoran. Her couture designs have appeared at the Met Gala, Royal Ascot, Paris Fashion Week, the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and the Dubai World Cup, where craftsmanship and elegance remain the defining standard.

Her artistry has also inspired collaborations with internationally recognized brands including Vineyard Vines, Swarovski, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, John Deere, Cirque du Soleil, Universal Studios, PBS, HGTV, and The Oprah Show, while her designs have been featured in film, television, editorial fashion, and luxury retail.

Jenny's commitment to craftsmanship has been recognized through honors including the Louisville Business First Enterprising Women Award, the Tory Burch Foundation Fellowship, Fashion Group International's Rising Star Award, and recognition as LUXlife's Best Renowned Milliner in the USA. Yet her greatest passion extends beyond the hats themselves.

Jenny believes that preserving craftsmanship means sharing it. As an educator, author, mentor, and speaker, she has devoted herself to inspiring the next generation of milliners. Her book, The Making of a Milliner, has become a respected educational resource, while her workshops and mentorship programs continue to pass centuries-old techniques to emerging artisans around the world.

She also believes that true luxury carries responsibility. Through charitable partnerships, community involvement, and educational initiatives, Jenny uses her work to celebrate artistry, empower creativity, and support causes close to her heart.

While every Formé creation begins as an expression of beauty, its purpose reaches far beyond fashion.

It is crafted to mark life's most meaningful moments. To celebrate milestones. To become part of family traditions. To carry memories. To be restored rather than replaced. To become tomorrow's heirloom.

At Formé Millinery, we believe that true luxury is measured not by trends or seasons, but by artistry that endures. Every hat is a celebration of exceptional craftsmanship, timeless design, and the enduring belief that beautiful things should outlive us.

Handcrafted today. Treasured tomorrow. Passed down for generations.

The Art of Hatmaking

Where Tradition Becomes Timeless

Step inside the atelier of Master Milliner Jenny Pfanenstiel and discover a world where craftsmanship is measured not by speed, but by patience. Surrounded by antique wooden hat blocks, vintage tools, and centuries-old techniques, every Formé creation is handcrafted with intention, honoring one of fashion's oldest and most celebrated art forms. At Formé Millinery, each hat is more than an accessory, it is a wearable work of art. Created to commemorate life's most meaningful moments, every piece becomes part of your story, carrying memories today and becoming tomorrow's heirloom.

The Art of Slow Craftsmanship - True luxury cannot be rushed

Creating a couture hat takes anywhere from several days to several weeks, with every step guided by traditional millinery techniques that have remained largely unchanged for more than 200 years.

Each hat begins with the centuries-old process of blocking, where natural fibers are carefully steamed, shaped, and sculpted by hand over antique wooden hat blocks. This slow process allows the material to develop its strength, elegance, and lasting structure, qualities that simply cannot be achieved through mass production.

Only the finest materials are selected from all over the globe renowned for producing the world's highest-quality millinery supplies. Jenny also incorporates treasured vintage elements, including Bakelite, antique hat pins, historic embellishments, and sentimental additions from clients, giving many of her creations a sense of history long before they become part of yours.

After the hat has been shaped and allowed to rest naturally, each piece is meticulously hand-cut, hand-sewn, wired, and finished. Every stitch is placed with purpose. Every detail is refined by hand. The result is exceptional comfort, balance, durability, and beauty.

Designed Around You

No two stories are alike, and neither are two Formé hats. Every custom piece begins with a personal consultation, where Jenny carefully considers not only measurements and proportions, but also your personality, lifestyle, occasion, and individual sense of style. Together, you'll select silhouettes, luxurious materials, colors, and handcrafted embellishments that create a piece unlike any other.

From sculptural horsehair to individually handcrafted feather flowers and signature braid work created on Jenny's rare 1800s braid machine, every detail is thoughtfully designed and entirely handmade. The finished piece is more than something you wear. It becomes part of your celebrations, your photographs, a part of your family's history.

A Legacy Crafted by Hand

Every Formé hat represents countless hours of craftsmanship, generations of knowledge, and an unwavering dedication to preserving the art of couture millinery. In an age of disposable fashion, Jenny creates pieces intended to be worn with pride, cared for with intention, restored when needed, and passed down for generations. Because true luxury isn't defined by trends, it is defined by craftsmanship that endures.
